Dear parents,

In the last few weeks, the students in Grade 7 have put a lot of effort into their academic studies. Below you will find out what we’ve been up to until now.

Language Arts

Our Language Arts class is divided into four sections: spelling, grammar, literature, and reading.

In spelling we looked at double consonants, perplexing words, and the /o/ sound. We also had a mega spelling test with all the words in lessons 1 to 4. Jenny scored 20 points out of 20, which means she had no mistakes at all! Wow, what an amazing girl!

In grammar we studied about sentence fragments; simple and compound sentences; proper and common nouns; concrete, abstract and collective nouns; compound and possessive nouns; appositives; contractions; and, action verbs. All this is heavy stuff which the students took in quite easily. So, I’m very happy with their performance. Ter and Junior had full scores in the grammar chapter test!

At the beginning of the term we looked at ways students can write short compositions about themselves. In the last few weeks we spent some time reading and writing poetry. Mint’s and Jenny’s poems will be published in the upcoming school newspaper. We also wrote stories about our favourite pets and leisure activities.

In literature we read some great texts about the importance of reading. We read about Harry Potter, about healthy lives, about children who changed the world and, generally, about the benefits of reading.

We continued the home and school (DEAR) reading program on a daily basis. At the end of every month, the students were rewarded for their efforts. They read great books from the school library and books they bought at the school book fair. I am very pleased with the progress they have made. Ben and Mint managed to read 400-page books in less than a month! Now that’s something all students in Grade 7 will be able to do by the end of the academic year.

Social Studies

In Social Studies we have finished the chapter about culture, population, economy and technology and moved on to the next chapter about the early history of Europe. I think the lessons about ancient Greece and Rome were the highlight of our Social Studies lessons. We applied what we’ve learned in class into two small projects. One was creating a timeline of Europe’s ancient history, and the other was understanding the way wars were fought during the Greek period. We watched a movie and “re-enacted” some of the scenes. Ben’s, Junior’s, CJ’s and Pluem’s contributions were memorable!

Pre-Algebra

I think that the Pre-Algebra lessons were the most difficult of all lessons we’ve had this past few weeks. Some students found solving equations a challenging task, but in the end, we got the gist of it. Other students performed exceptionally, getting very good grades in their quizzes. Among them are Jom Jam, Jenny, Mint and Ter.

Earth Science

Looking at rocks and bodies of water was the major focus of our Science lessons. Although the vocabulary could be at times quite difficult and the concepts quite abstract, the students understood the main concepts and were able to apply themselves correspondingly. CJ and Jenny were among the first to understand the concepts taught.

Conclusion

Overall, I am very pleased with the progress the students in Grade 7 have made until this point in the academic year. In the future I would like them not to forget to review every day at home the weekly vocabulary lists in all subjects. The blue words in the Social Studies textbook, the yellow words in the Earth Science textbook, and the vocabulary introduced before every literature lesson are words that I expect them to be able to use with easy whenever an opportunity arises.

I’m looking forwards to meeting all the parents during our parent-teacher conferences which will start after our short holiday.

Until next time, I wish you a perfect day.

Sincerely yours,

Voicu Mihnea Simandan
